These are called Extra Oral Appliances.  There are many types.  The allow us to use a portion of the skull (neck, chin, forehead, and outside of the mouth) as an anchor to help us move dental bones and teeth.  With the development of implants and newer orthodontic appliances, the use of headgears has been reduced dramatically.  Headgears are most commonly used to affect growth.  Subsequently when indicated, in our office they can be used with young pre-adolescent children.

Forcus Springs are "Bite Jumpers" that is, they encourage the lower jaw to reposition forward into the correct bite. They need to act for at least 4-6 months.
